The story behind the name “Skoula”

Soula, a square building that houses concrete basins with faucets used as laundry tubs, is located by the old road to Skala, below the village of Pastra. The construction started before the German occupation although it stopped at a very early stage. It was completed right after the earthquake of 1953 with volunteer personal work provided by the villagers of the area to serve their needs.

For several years the residents had to walk on foot to Skoula to wash their clothes in the basins and carry fresh drinking water in pitchers to keep it cool. Around 1960, when water was supplied to the houses of the region Skoula was no longer necessary for basic needs, but it is always present in the stories of the past and a reference point even for the youngest.

The laughter and the voices of girls gathering to wash their clothes resounded to the cultivated fields located nearby. Young men passed by, knowing that the girls would be there. In the summer groups of friends returning fro the sea (where there were going on foot) stopped for a short rest and farmers had a valuable ally to irrigate their fields.
